Alexandra Rose Raisman Bio

Alexandra Rose Raisman (born May 25, 1994) is an ex-retired American artistic gymnast, and a two-time Olympian. She was the American women's Olympic gymnastics team captain for both the 2012 and 2016 "Fierce Five" U.S. teams. At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she received a gold medal at the team event with teammates Gabby Douglas and Gabby Douglas the sole Americans with back-to-back team gold medals. Raisman also won silver medals for individual all-around and for floor exercise. Raisman received silver medals for the all-around individual, and also for the floor exercise. She also is two-time national champion in floor exercises (2012 and 2015) as well as the 2012 champion of the national championship in balance beam. She also is an all-time champion of the national all-around competitions at national championships (silver bronze, silver 2011 and 2015.). In 2013, she was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Raisman was born on May 25, 1994 in the Boston suburb of Needham, Massachusetts, to Lynn (nee Faber), an ex-high school gymnast and Rick Raisman. She has three younger siblings: Brett, Chloe, and Madison. Raisman, who is Jewish and has stated that she is extremely proud in the fact that she is able to represent the United States of America, but as well as the Jewish community all over the world. Raisman started gymnastics when she was eighteen months. She attributes her initial enthusiasm for the sport to the "Magnificent Seven", the gold-medal winning U.S. women's team at the 1996 Summer Olympics that she observed on VHS.She was a student at Exxcel Gymnastics and Climbing through the level 8 stage, when she moved to Brestyan's American Gymnastics Club under coaches Mihai and Silvia Brestyan. Raisman completed her studies at Needham High School, 2012 after completing her senior year via online courses and training to compete in the Olympics.
